In the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire competition, the chess question worth 1 million TL caused the contestant to be eliminated. In the competition, where the question asked which country has no citizen holding the Grandmaster title awarded by the International Chess Federation, the options Turkey, Zambia, India, and Japan were presented. The contestant who answered Zambia bid farewell to the competition due to the wrong answer, while the correct answer was surprising.
In the latest episode of the phenomenal TV show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” a question was asked about the Grandmaster title awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). The contestant tried to find the correct answer among four countries.
THE 1 MILLION TL QUESTION
The question worth 1 million TL presented to the contestant included the statement, "Which country has never had even a single citizen holding the 'Grandmaster' title awarded by the International Chess Federation?"
The options were listed as follows:
- A) Turkey
- B) Zambia
- C) India
- D) Japan
SAID ZAMBIA, BID FAREWELL TO THE COMPETITION
The contestant, thinking over the options, chose Zambia in option B. However, when it was announced that the answer was wrong, they bid farewell to the competition. The correct answer to the question was Japan in option D.
WHY DOES JAPAN HAVE NO GRANDMASTER?
Grandmaster, one of the highest titles in chess, is awarded to players who meet the achievement criteria set by FIDE. Along with Turkey and India, there are athletes from Zambia who have reached this title.
In Japan, however, shogi, a traditional strategy game similar to chess, is played much more widely. The country's failure to produce a player with the Grandmaster title in international chess formed the correct answer to the 1 million TL question in the competition.
