Workers who are members of the General İş Union affiliated with DİSK at Kadıköy Municipality started a strike due to the deadlock in the collective bargaining negotiations, which lasted only 1 minute; the workers learned that an agreement had been reached between the employer's representative, the Social Democratic Public Employers Union (SODEMSEN), and the union just 1 minute after the strike banner was hung at the municipality.
MASS RESIGNATION
The management of General-İş Istanbul Anatolian Side Branch No. 1, reacting to the move of the union's general headquarters, resigned.
The Board of Directors stated that they rejected being part of the calculations that further cornered municipal workers and called for the resignation of the General-İş General Headquarters, which escalated cooperation with the employer to another level, by violating their own initiative and the will of the workers and ignoring the demands of the workers in the collective bargaining process with Kadıköy Municipality.
The statement made was as follows:
Due to the unresolved status of the collective bargaining negotiation table on the evening of November 18, the strike we initiated ended with the unjust termination by the General-İş General Headquarters just one minute later, as a message from the employer. Unfortunately, many elected General-İş branches in Istanbul and Izmir have experienced a similar fate. The will of the branch management, which represents the will of the workers and protects their interests, has been disregarded once again in Kadıköy, as it has been many times in the last month. The free collective agreement we prepared to protect our rights and obtain our rights has once again been reduced to miserable wages by the employer and the union through a framework agreement.
This problematic cooperation and this approach are not suitable for either a political party or a union. We refuse to be part of the calculations that further corner municipal workers and invite the General-İş General Headquarters, which has recently escalated cooperation with the employer to another level, to resign.
Being a branch of a union that disregards the will of the workers while sitting in those seats has lost its meaning for us. As the Board of Directors of Anatolian Side Branch No. 1, we resign. We will continue to fight for workers to receive what is rightfully theirs and to achieve humane living and working conditions. We announce to the public that we will continue to stand against anyone who is an enemy of workers and labor.
