The CHP filed a criminal complaint against the Minister of National Education, Yusuf Tekin.

The words of Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin regarding secularism have ignited a new debate in the public sphere, and his statement, "What you understand by secularism is not the same as what I understand," has prompted the CHP leadership to take action. Speaking on behalf of the CHP delegation that filed a criminal complaint against Minister Tekin, Deputy Chairman Suat Özçağdaş stated, "Yusuf Tekin has now become a matter of survival."

The Republican People's Party (CHP) filed a criminal complaint against Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin due to his statements regarding secularism. CHP Deputy Chairman Suat Özçağdaş, along with some members of parliament and party members, gathered in front of the Ankara Courthouse to file a complaint against Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin. Özçağdaş stated in his remarks that Minister Yusuf Tekin committed the crime of "abuse of office by publicly inciting hatred and hostility against the people with false statements and evaluations contrary to his oath made in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey."

"STATEMENTS REGARDING THE REPUBLIC AND SECULARISM ARE UNACCEPTABLE"

Özçağdaş continued by stating that Tekin's remarks about the Republic and secularism during his speech at the 8th Ordinary Congress of the AK Party Batman Central District are unacceptable: "Yusuf Tekin has now become a matter of survival. Secularism, which is also enshrined in our Constitution, is one of the six fundamental principles of our country's founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Secularism is defined in the broadest sense as the establishment of the state order and legal rules based on reason, logic, and science rather than religion. Furthermore, secularism stands as a principle that ensures citizens have the freedom of religion and conscience, to perform their worship as they wish in accordance with their beliefs, and that no worship or religious ceremony is questioned or prevented, provided it does not violate the laws."

Özçağdaş noted that Yusuf Tekin swore to "remain committed to the democratic and secular Republic and the principles and reforms of Atatürk" by reading the text in Article 81 of the Constitution, claiming that Minister Tekin, by not adhering to this oath, has targeted the principle of secularism with lies and distorted statements.

WHAT DID MINISTER TEKIN SAY?

Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin criticized the CHP through secularism during his speech at the AK Party Central District Congress in Batman, stating: "They criticize me. They say that what you say is contrary to secular education. I say it may be contrary to you, but it is not contrary to the values of citizens in Batman, Erzurum. If there is a contradiction, it is between what you understand as secularism and what the citizens understand. Your understanding of secularism is this; remember the 1940s, locking the doors of mosques, turning mosques into barns, prohibiting citizens from learning the Quran. This is what you understand by secularism. You did these as a requirement of secularism. Then, what you understand by secularism is not the same as what I understand."

"THE SECULARISM YOU DEFEND AND THE SECULARISM I UNDERSTAND ARE NOT THE SAME"

I understand secularism as the guarantee of the state for the freedom of religious belief and worship of all citizens, regardless of what religion they believe in. What do you understand? You understand the restriction and prohibition of the freedom of belief of Muslims. Then, there is undoubtedly a difference between our understandings of secularism. I am in favor of universal secularism, while you are imposing your own invented concept of secularism specific to Turkey on me. This cannot be. What you understand by secularism is this; trying to convince a child who wants to go to university with a headscarf in persuasion rooms, you did this as a requirement of secularism. While doing this, you defended yourself with secularism. So, is the secularism you defend the same as the secularism I understand? It is not the same."
