The Communication Presidency shared! Here are the frequently asked questions about the monkeypox virus.

23.08.2024 23:50

The Presidency Communication Directorate has published an informative article about monkeypox disease. In the statement made by the Presidency, symptoms of the monkeypox virus, what the infected person should do, and frequently asked questions about the treatment of the disease were shared.

The Presidency Communication Directorate shared some questions and answers about the disease known as monkeypox or M flower (mpox).

"When should the M flower test be done?", "What are the symptoms of M flower?", "What should a person with M flower symptoms do?", "How is M flower treated?" were some of the questions answered in the announcement made on the Presidency's social media account.

Questions and answers shared about the disease are as follows:

WHAT IS M FLOWER?

M flower is a viral disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans, although it is clinically milder, rarely fatal, and has symptoms similar to those seen in smallpox patients in the past.

WHEN SHOULD THE M FLOWER TEST BE DONE?

People who think they have M flower or have close contact with someone with M flower should consult a healthcare institution and the decision to perform the test should be made by a doctor.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF M FLOWER?

M flower usually manifests as fever, respiratory symptoms (such as sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough), headache, muscle aches, back pain, swollen lymph nodes, and characteristic skin rashes specific to the disease.

WHAT SHOULD A PERSON WITH M FLOWER SYMPTOMS DO?

When a new or unexplained skin rash is noticed, a healthcare institution should be consulted. Until the visit to the healthcare institution and the test results are obtained, close contact with others (including sexual contact) should be avoided. If the test result is positive, the patient should continue to isolate themselves until they have a clean and healthy skin appearance (the skin rashes will crust and heal). The patient should continue to isolate themselves until the fever, sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough symptoms disappear.

While isolating themselves, the patient should avoid contact with others (including sexual contact), only go out for medical appointments or emergencies, and avoid using public transportation. When the patient needs to leave isolation, they should cover the skin rashes and wear a well-fitting mask on their face. The M flower virus can be transmitted from person to person through direct contact with skin rashes and crusts, as well as body fluids. The M flower virus can be transmitted from person to person through prolonged, close contact and sexual contact. Some patients can transmit the virus to others 1-4 days before the onset of M flower symptoms.

HOW IS M FLOWER TREATED?

There is no specific treatment developed for M flower, but antiviral drugs used to treat smallpox due to genetic similarities between the viruses can be used in the treatment of M flower, although their effectiveness has not been fully proven.

CAN MY PET BE INFECTED WITH THE M FLOWER VIRUS?

M flower is a zoonotic (transmissible between animals and humans) disease, but currently, pets are not considered to pose a high risk for the M flower virus.
