The construction of the 19 May Stadium, which is currently under construction in Ankara and will enter the world rankings upon completion, is progressing rapidly. It will have a capacity of 50,000 and will be used not only for football matches but also for congresses, cultural events, and various sports disciplines.
The construction of the 19 May Stadium, which will be a symbol of Ankara, is progressing rapidly. Recent drone footage shows that the stadium has reached the stage of installing its steel roof and that the structural skeleton is largely completed.
CAPACITY OF 50 THOUSAND
The old stadium was demolished in 2018, and a modern, multi-purpose facility was started to be built in its place. The new stadium will have a capacity of approximately 50 thousand and will be used not only for football matches but also for congresses, cultural events, and various sports branches.
UNIQUE FEATURE WORLDWIDE
The roof structure of the stadium weighs 17 thousand tons and has the unique feature of being the only one in the world. The steel roof, consisting of a total of 182,984 pieces, is designed to provide maximum durability and safety according to engineering calculations. The roof is supported by 8 different reinforced concrete foundations approved by METU and ITU and is connected to the grandstand's reinforced concrete at 4 different points with super sliding supports.
WILL HOST MANY UNITS
When completed, the stadium will host units such as commercial areas, shops, restaurants, a museum, and conference halls. Additionally, there will be areas for various branches such as archery, taekwondo, boxing, fencing, dance, shooting, karate, judo, table tennis, kickboxing, and muay thai.
SUITABLE FOR INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
The stadium, designed with the comfort of fans and athletes in mind, will have a parking capacity of 695 open and 460 closed spaces. With technological equipment that prevents ground degradation, the stadium is planned to be a safe and comfortable sports and event center. The new 19 May Stadium will not only provide Ankara with a contemporary sports and culture complex but will also be a suitable facility for international organizations.
'GOD WILLING, IT WILL BE A MAGNIFICENT THING'
Football fans living in Ankara shared their opinions about the ongoing construction of the stadium. Tekin Var, who stated that he is a Fenerbahçe supporter, said, "Of course, having national matches is emotional and exciting. There is certainly effort involved; it is a project, but when evaluating those facilities, I look at it in comparison to Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium. At first glance, everyone sees it as a pile of pipes, but God willing, something magnificent will come out of it. Of course, we are not the authorized people for the project, but as we see it from the outside, we hope it will be completed as soon as possible. Right now, it looks like a pile of iron. It will also bring excitement when there are national matches," he expressed.
'THERE WAS NO BEAUTIFUL STADIUM IN HUGE ANKARA'
Burak Silay, who identified himself as an Ankaragücü supporter, stated, "The stadium should have been built in Ankara a long time ago. After all, it is the capital. There was no beautiful stadium in huge Ankara. They are just now finishing a project that should have been completed 20 years ago. I hope it finishes, and I would love to go and watch when there are national matches or any matches like the European Championship. If it finishes sooner and earlier, we want to watch the matches," he said.
'WE ARE EXCITED, WE SUPPORT OUR NATIONAL TEAM'
Ahmet Musa Yeşilkaya emphasized that the stadium's accessibility will also affect fan participation, saying, "It's a very nice development. I think it will be beneficial. Of course, it will also be important visually. It is easy to access the metro. Ulus is the heart of Ankara. Football exists with fans, after all. I love and support the Gençlerbirliği team. I also reside in Keçiören. Keçiörengücü is one of my favorite clubs. We are excited, and we support our national team. If it happens, I would be very pleased as a member of the public," he stated.
'THE NATIONAL TEAM NEEDS ITS OWN STADIUM'
Hayrullah Sırakaya expressed that there is a lack of stadiums as the capital of Turkey, saying, "Of course, we want Gençlerbirliği to stay in the league and Ankaragücü to come to the league as soon as possible. A stadium that befits the capital. We are waiting for it to be completed as soon as possible. If it is going to be as we see in the visuals, it will be a fitting stadium, a stadium of European standards. Centrally located in Ankara, in the heart. A place that everyone can easily reach. Just like Wembley Stadium in England, the national team needs its own stadium. Most likely, European matches will be played here. We wholeheartedly support our national team," he said.
