In the last episode of the series "Arka Sokaklar," which started airing in 2006 and has been meeting with the audience for 19 seasons, the topic addressed sparked discussions among viewers. The last episode dealt with the issue of child abuse. COMMISSIONER MESUT SLAPPED THE CULT LEADERThe character Commissioner Mesut slapped the cult leader after asking, "Are you sharing the same bed with your grandson?" In another scene, Commissioner Hüsnü's line, "What happened to that child you made from the child?" drew attention. STATEMENT FROM THE RTÜK PRESIDENTWhile the "cult" scene in the series quickly became a topic of discussion, a statement regarding the issue also came from RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin. In a statement made on his X account, Şahin said, "We are carefully following all criticisms and constructive comments made through RTÜK and myself regarding the series, programs, and sports competitions that are included in the broadcasting institutions in our field of regulation and supervision. "ISLAMOPHOBIA" MESSAGEIt is not possible to accept unjust accusations, or even more so, slanders made against me and my institution without fully understanding the issues or having accurate information. RTÜK will never allow broadcasts that fuel the disease of our age, Islamophobia. Our Upper Board is the institution that organized the "International Islamophobia and Media Summit" for the first time in our country with the support of our President. RTÜK, which ensures that the media's ground for the Islamophobia that has spread in the West is discussed, is addressing the issue with the extensive views of experts operating in the international community and presenting solutions to the public. RTÜK does not ignore broadcasts that encourage or promote violence. RTÜK will never allow illegal advertisements in any broadcasts or sports competitions. RTÜK does not allow broadcasts that threaten our national security and contain terrorism and terrorist propaganda, and cannot ignore broadcasting organizations that do not comply with broadcasting bans imposed by our independent courts. In broadcasts, especially in series referred to as dramatic productions, it does not allow scenes against Islam, the religion of peace, or content that belittles those who belong to our religion and disrespects our religious leaders. "OUR UPPER BOARD TAKES NECESSARY MEASURES"The Radio and Television Supreme Council does not allow statements that would harm our values that make us who we are as a nation and would disrupt our unity and solidarity, and does not permit images in this context. Our Upper Board is taking necessary measures by not ignoring scenes in series that divert from our religion's guiding light and peaceful living. Recently, it has taken utmost care regarding censorship allegations even during the broadcasting phase of series trailers containing anti-Islamic and conservative community content, and has taken necessary warning measures in accordance with the procedure. Legal sanctions have been applied against broadcasting organizations that do not heed constructive warnings, as was the case yesterday, and will continue to be applied. It is unthinkable for us to approve or allow any broadcasts that encourage social violence, especially against women and children. Our Upper Board has imposed sanctions 119 times on broadcasts that have destroyed our national and spiritual values recently. Sanctions have been applied 18 times for violent content and 14 times for broadcasts containing terrorist propaganda. A total of 69 different sanction decisions have been made for violations of the provisions of Articles 8, a, b, and c of Law No. 6112. It should be known that RTÜK is not a censorship institution. Our constitution explicitly prohibits censorship. RTÜK monitors media service providers after broadcasts and imposes penalties when necessary. Additionally, RTÜK is not obliged to share information about every regulatory activity it carries out unless necessary. RTÜK is at the forefront of its duty. It shares with the public as it implements its actions. We thank our sensitive public for their follow-ups and constructive criticisms, and we reiterate that we work in line with the expectations of our people, and we extend our respects to the public."
