CITIZENS COMPLAIN ABOUT BOTH ODOR AND POLLUTION

Highlighting that sewage is flowing into the Bosphorus, the President of the Istanbul Environmental Council, Zafer Murat Çetintaş, said, "İSKİ is making very serious investments, but sewage is still flowing in many places in the Istanbul Bosphorus. Someone is discharging sewage into this stream you see. Since sewage is heavy and dense, it stays along the shores, but if it were rainwater, it would go directly to the open sea. I report this situation to the authorities, I complain. However, no necessary measures have been taken so far. They say they have fixed it, but you look and it seems to be fixed. Then you see that the same sewage continues to be discharged one day. If we take aerial images 365 days a year, we can see this scene for at least 60 days. The citizens there are complaining about both the strong odor and the pollution going into the sea. There are tourist spots along the shores where sewage flows," he said.

SEWAGE FLOWS FROM AT LEAST 10 POINTS

Çetintaş stated that the waste and sewage discharged into the Bosphorus reduce oxygen levels, saying, "Wastewater is flowing towards the Sea of Marmara with currents. Later, this waste settles in the sea. As a result of this settling, it depletes the oxygen at the bottom. This also hinders mid-water fish. Because mid-water fish feed on plankton, their access to these nutrients is blocked. The Ministry of Environment occasionally fines some municipalities for their mistakes. As a citizen, I kindly request that penalties be imposed on the facility that discharges sewage into the Bosphorus and the individuals or institutions that pollute that stream. I can prove that sewage flows into the sea at least 10 points with aerial shots in the Istanbul Bosphorus," he concluded.
