A decision has been made to extend the deadline for the new period starting on March 1, 2025, for taxis, minibuses, and buses. Vehicles that do not have a vehicle tracking and camera system, video recording device, and emergency button equipment will not pass their first inspection after July 1, 2025, and will be banned from traffic.

The Ministry of Interior has published the Regulation on Amendments to the Highway Traffic Regulation in the Official Gazette.

Under the Highway Transport Law, the Metropolitan Municipality Law, and the Municipality Law, the requirement for M2 and M3 class vehicles used for commercial passenger transport, which are owned by municipalities or authorized by municipalities, to have vehicle tracking and camera systems, image recording devices, and emergency buttons will not be enforced until the first inspections after July 1, 2025.

This period was previously announced as March 1, 2025.

WHAT DOES THE REGULATION BRING?

As part of the regulation, the obligation for in-vehicle camera systems will cover the interior of the vehicle, including the driver's seat, and the view of the road. Vehicles without this system will not pass inspection and cannot be operated.

Taxi camera recordings must be kept for at least 1 month. This period can be re-regulated by the Provincial Transportation Coordination Centers and Provincial Traffic Commissions.

The General Directorate of Security and the General Command of Gendarmerie will be able to access these images upon request.

The decision was made in the context of increasing attacks on taxi drivers and security concerns.

The aim is to ensure the safety of both drivers and passengers with in-vehicle cameras.
