The toll is rising from the severe 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Indonesia's Flores region on August 15. According to the latest statement from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the number of fatalities in the disaster has reached 71.
MORE THAN 200 AFTERSHOCKS
Following the main 7.7 magnitude earthquake that shook the region, at least 235 aftershocks occurred, the largest of which was 6.2. While search, rescue, and debris removal efforts continue, a separate 6.9 magnitude earthquake was also recorded near the city of Pematangsiantar in North Sumatra province.
THOUSANDS LEFT HOMELESS
Berton Panjaitan, Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data Center, conveyed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and shared the latest situation in the region. Due to the earthquake, more than 900 houses were completely destroyed, while partial damage was detected in over 1,300 buildings. Approximately 5,000 people who lost their homes were evacuated to temporary shelter areas.
TRANSPORTATION DISRUPTED AND ROADS CLOSED
Landslides triggered by the violent tremors caused transportation to be cut off at critical points along the 700-kilometer main road connecting settlements throughout the Flores region. Teams are continuing their efforts uninterruptedly to open closed roads and deliver humanitarian aid to the disaster areas.
