After a two-year investigation, it was decided that Gomez will stand trial, while Sanchez described the process as a political operation, and the opposition called for early elections.

The indictment prepared within the scope of the corruption investigation into Begona Gomez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has been accepted. Gomez faces four separate charges.

The indictment against Begona Gomez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, which includes four separate charges of embezzlement, influence peddling, corruption in business dealings, and misuse of public funds, has been accepted by the court. After a two-year investigation, Judge Juan Carlos Peinado ruled that Gomez should stand trial due to "allegations of irregularities" during her tenure as co-director of two master's programs and a private chair at the Complutense University of Madrid.

THE INVESTIGATION LASTED APPROXIMATELY 2 YEARS

Judge Peinado concluded, after a preliminary investigation that lasted nearly two years, that there was sufficient evidence that Gomez, using her status as the prime minister's wife, provided privileged contacts at an institutional level and offered unfair advantages to some companies. The charge of "usurpation of professional authority" against Gomez was dropped due to a lack of sufficient concrete evidence. Within the scope of the investigation, it was also decided to file a case against Gomez's advisor at the Moncloa Palace, the Prime Minister's Residence, Cristina Alvarez, and businessman Juan Carlos Barrabes. Judge Peinado gave the parties a 5-day period to prepare their defenses and submit their sentencing requests.

SANCHEZ DESCRIBED THE CASE AS A "POLITICAL OPERATION"

While Gomez denies the charges against her, Prime Minister Sanchez argued that the charges against his wife are a political operation coordinated by the opposition. The People's Party (PP) and the far-right Vox Party stated that the corruption allegations have caused the government to lose its legitimacy and called for early elections.

According to Spanish law, serious crimes such as influence peddling and embezzlement are tried in jury courts. The trial date is expected to be clarified in the coming days.

On the other hand, Prime Minister Sanchez's brother, David Sanchez, is also expected to appear before a judge next month due to corruption allegations.
