DEFENSE: SHE WAS SUFFERING FROM POSTPARTUM PSYCHOSIS
Lindsay Clancy, 35, admits to strangling her 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan with exercise bands in the basement of her home in Duxbury, near Boston, in January 2023. Clancy then attempted to end her life by stabbing herself and jumping from a second-story window. The attempt failed, leaving her paralyzed due to the incident.
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington stated that his client suffered from postpartum mental health issues for months after giving birth to her third child, saying, "She was experiencing psychosis when she went down to the basement."
Reddington argued that Clancy was a loving mother who sought treatment from many health facilities due to suicidal thoughts and postpartum psychiatric disorders, but the prescribed medications did not help.
PROSECUTION: SHE PLANNED THE MURDERS
Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham acknowledged that Clancy had mental health issues but said this does not excuse the murders.
Buckingham claimed that before sending her husband to pick up a food order, Clancy calculated the return time on her phone and used that time to kill her children. The prosecutor argued that Clancy "acted quickly to accomplish a very specific goal," which was to kill her children.
EX-HUSBAND TESTIFIED
Patrick Clancy, who divorced Lindsay Clancy, testified as the first witness of the trial, stating that his wife was discharged from a psychiatric hospital about two weeks before the incident but showed no signs of harming their children or herself before the event.
Patrick Clancy said his wife acted completely normal when he left home to pick up dinner. According to the prosecution, when Patrick returned home, he found his wife in the yard, called 911, and after first responders arrived, discovered the lifeless bodies of the three children in the basement.
FACING LIFE IMPRISONMENT
Lindsay Clancy faces a mandatory life sentence if convicted on any of the first-degree murder charges. In the trial, expected to last about 6 to 8 weeks, the court will assess whether Clancy had a mental illness that eliminates her legal responsibility at the time of the murders.
