The Chairman of the MHP, Devlet Bahçeli, shook hands with DEM Party deputies at the opening of the new legislative year of the Parliament and stated, "The hand I extend is an offer to be a 'Turkey party', it is a message of our national unity and brotherhood," marking the first step of the new political strategy of the People's Alliance. DEM Party Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları responded by saying, "The DEM Party is already a Turkey party." PROPOSALS THAT BAHÇELİ WON'T LIKEWhile the echoes of these statements, which initiate a new process in Turkish politics, continue, the law proposals presented by the DEM Party, which claims "We are a Turkey party," seem unlikely to please Bahçeli, who extended his hand... THEY WANT ÖCALAN'S RELEASEFollowing the law proposal foreseeing the release of the PKK terrorist organization's leader Abdullah Öcalan from Imralı prison by the group vice presidents, 55 deputies also prepared 110 separate law proposals that foresee both the release and the suspension of the execution of sentences. All proposals, sent to the Justice Commission by the Presidency of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on October 8, 2024, foresee the release of those sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment and prisoners who have served a total of 25 years in prison. The proposals also include Öcalan, who has been in Imralı since February 16, 1999. A SPECIAL PROVISION IS ADDED TO THE PROPOSALThe law proposals foresee amendments to the Anti-Terror Law and the Law on Criminal Procedure and Security Measures. A provision is added to the law stating, "The sentences of those who have been sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment or whose death sentences have been converted to aggravated life imprisonment will be evaluated for conditional release starting from the 25th year of their sentences." NEW STATEMENT FROM MHPOn the other hand, Feti Yıldız, Deputy Chairman of the MHP and a close aide to Devlet Bahçeli, evaluated the 'new era' with the DEM Party, stating, "As soon as they become a Turkey party, it will be discussed; they need to free themselves from the scourge of terrorism and separatism, and then it will be easy for them. Comments like 'It is being done for the Constitution, for the elections' are very shallow comments in our opinion. Terrorism and separatism have exploited Turkey's energy for 40 years. This issue is very important, very," he expressed.
