The trial of Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is being prosecuted on charges of "aggravated forgery of official documents" with a demand of up to 8 years and 9 months in prison over allegations that his diploma is fake, has been adjourned to December 25.

The fifth hearing of the trial, in which Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was removed from his post as Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) following his arrest, is being tried on charges of 'forgery of official documents in a chain manner' with a prison sentence demand of up to 8 years and 9 months over the claim that his university diploma was fake, took place.

The hearing was held by the Istanbul 59th Criminal Court of First Instance in the hall opposite the Marmara Closed Penitentiary Institution in Silivri. İmamoğlu, who is detained on another charge, and his lawyers attended. Present at the hearing were CHP Group Leader Özgür Özel, İBB Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan, Ekrem İmamoğlu's wife Dilek İmamoğlu, his son Mehmet Selim İmamoğlu, some members of parliament, some CHP officials, representatives from foreign countries, and a large number of spectators.

SPECTATORS APPLAUDED STANDING UP

İmamoğlu, who was brought to the hall by the gendarmerie, was applauded by the spectators standing up. The judge stated that the decision of the 5th Administrative Court regarding the diploma had been added to the case file and noted that it was ruled to await the finalization of the said decision. İmamoğlu's defense was heard during the hearing.

The court adjourned the case until December 25.
