The driver Mehmet Can Dandin, who caused the deaths of two young people by hitting them with his car while driving under the influence of alcohol in the Etimesgut district of Ankara, was released after being arrested for 3 months. Dandin was taken into custody again upon the prosecutor's objection.

The driver Mehmet Can Dandin (25), who caused the deaths of university student Umut Can (24) and math teacher Ekin Sert (31) by hitting them with his car while exceeding the speed limit and walking on the sidewalk while drunk in Ankara, was released 3 months after the accident. Dandin was arrested again upon the objection of the prosecutor's office.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On February 26th on 1st TBMM Avenue in Etimesgut district; Mehmet Can Dandin's car, which he lost control of, hit Umut Can, a 2nd year student in the Department of Tourism Management at Süleyman Demirel University, and Ekin Sert, a math teacher who graduated from ODTÜ Industrial Engineering. While Can and Sert lost their lives, driver Dandin and his 3 friends fled the scene. It was revealed that Dandin was driving at 112 kilometers per hour on a road with a speed limit of 50 kilometers, and he violated the traffic light at the intersection. Dandin turned himself in to the police 2 days later. While Dandin was arrested at the Peace Criminal Court, his 3 friends were released.

RELEASED BEFORE INDICTMENT WAS PREPARED

Mehmet Can Dandin was released by the Peace Criminal Court approximately 3 months after his arrest on May 22nd, upon the objection of his lawyer, by paying a bail amount of 500 thousand liras, and he was ordered not to leave his residence and not to travel abroad. He was also released under judicial control measures. 2 days after Dandin's release, on May 24th, an indictment was prepared.

In the prepared indictment, Dandin was charged with 'Causing death and injury by negligence' and a prison sentence of up to 15 years was demanded. The indictment was accepted by Ankara West 3rd Heavy Penal Court and a trial was opened. It was also stated that Dandin and his 3 friends drank alcohol at a restaurant before getting into a rental car. It was stated that Mehmet Can Dandin was driving at a speed of 112 kilometers on a road with a speed limit of 50 kilometers, lost control of the vehicle due to the curved road and the effect of alcohol, and hit Umut Can and Ekin Sert, who did not know each other, causing their deaths. According to the forensic report, it was determined that Dandin was primarily at fault and Ekin Sert and Umut Can were not at fault.
