European Union countries have in principle approved the lifting of all economic sanctions against Syria. The decision aims to support the reconstruction of the country following the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime.
After the end of the civil war in Syria, the normalization process that began internationally is gaining momentum. In this context, a significant step has come from the European Union.
PRE-AGREEMENT REACHED
According to information provided by the world's oldest news agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP), the EU has reached a pre-agreement to lift all sanctions imposed on the Damascus administration.
SANCTIONS ON SYRIA TO BE LIFTED
At the latest meeting held in Brussels, EU foreign ministers unanimously decided to lift the economic sanctions imposed on Syria since 2011. These sanctions were initiated against the Assad regime and included freezing the assets of regime officials, travel bans, restrictions on oil exports, and various economic sector embargoes.
TO BE OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED
Diplomats stated that ambassadors from the EU's 27 member countries will officially announce the decision at the Foreign Ministers' Meeting to be held today in Brussels.
BACKGROUND OF THE DECISION
The civil war that began in Syria in 2011 has led to the displacement of millions of people, the collapse of infrastructure, and the near halt of the economy. Although the EU's sanctions aimed to weaken the regime economically, they received criticism for further worsening the living conditions of the civilian population. With the fall of Assad, a new political process was initiated in Syria, and the international community began to take action for the reconstruction of the country.
DONALD TRUMP ALSO LIFTED SANCTIONS
U.S. President Donald Trump announced at an investment forum held in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, that he had lifted all U.S. sanctions imposed on Syria at the request of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Trump emphasized that this decision is an important step for the reconstruction of Syria and stability in the region. He also noted that Erdoğan argued that sanctions should be lifted to support the new administration in Syria and to enhance the economic welfare of the people.
