US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation. It was noted that the request for the meeting came from Trump; they spoke for the first time following the increasing trade tensions.
FIRST STATEMENT FROM TRUMP
After the meeting, Trump made a statement saying that the conversation went very well for both sides and that the teams from both countries would meet as soon as possible.
Trump also stated, "There are no longer any issues regarding the complexity of rare earth products. Xi Jinping invited me to Beijing."
CHINA'S ATTENTION TO TAIWAN ISSUE
Meanwhile, after the meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping also made a statement. The Chinese leader highlighted the Taiwan issue, saying, "We would be pleased to host Trump in China. Both sides should enhance their understanding of each other in military and economic areas. We must address the shortcomings. Both sides should reduce misunderstandings and strengthen understanding. China has sincerity and principles. If an agreement has been reached, both sides must adhere to it."
The US should handle the Taiwan issue 'carefully.' Both sides should act with a 'win-win' formula. The US must avoid allowing a small number of Taiwanese independence separatists to drag China and the US into a dangerous conflict," he said.
WHAT HAPPENED?
After the two largest economies in the world raised tariffs on each other, delegations from both countries met in Geneva, Switzerland, and partially reduced mutual tariffs. China's suspension of rare earth element and magnet exports in April due to trade tensions further escalated the situation, affecting supply chains in many sectors from automotive to defense.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated the day before that a meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping was expected this week and that the export ban was high on the agenda, saying, "Our administration is closely monitoring China's compliance with the Geneva Trade Agreement."
