A striking development has occurred in Greenland, which US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wants to take control of. The Greenland Parliament accepted the security agreement that paves the way for the US to expand its military presence on the island and establish 2 new military bases, with 16 votes in favor and 7 abstentions. No MP opposed the agreement; for it to enter into force, approval from the Danish Parliament is also required.

An important step has been taken regarding the US military presence in Greenland, whose strategic importance Trump has long highlighted. The island's parliament approved the agreement that will enable the Washington administration to expand its military activities in the region.

GREEN LIGHT FROM GREENLAND'S PARLIAMENT TO THE US

The Greenland Parliament voted on the security agreement paving the way for the US to expand its military presence on the island. According to information in the Greenlandic press, 16 MPs voted yes on the agreement while 7 MPs abstained. No MP voted against the agreement in the vote. Thus, the regulation concerning the US military activities in Greenland passed parliamentary approval. Under the agreement, the way was opened for the US to establish 2 military bases in Greenland. However, there is one more stage that must be completed for the decision to be implemented.

THE DANISH PARLIAMENT WILL HAVE THE FINAL SAY

The security agreement accepted by the Greenland Parliament has not yet entered into force. For the regulation to be officially implemented, the Danish Parliament must also approve it. The approval process in Denmark is expected to be completed between November 12 and 19. After this stage, the parliamentary process before the agreement's entry into force can be completed. Since Greenland is an autonomous region affiliated with the Kingdom of Denmark, the Copenhagen administration also plays a decisive role in international regulations in the field of defense and security.

TRUMP, DANISH AND GREENLAND LEADERS HAD SIGNED

The agreement aimed at expanding the US military presence in Greenland had been signed in New York on September 22. US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen, who came together within the scope of the 81st United Nations General Assembly deliberations, had signed the agreement regarding the US providing security controls on the island. While the agreement in question envisaged the US establishing 2 military bases in Greenland, the island's position in the field of defense and security also came to the fore again.

TRUMP HAD WANTED TO PUT GREENLAND UNDER US CONTROL

Greenland has been at the center of international debates since the beginning of the year due to US President Donald Trump's statements. Trump had argued that Greenland is indispensable for US national security due to its strategic location and natural resources. The US President had stated that control of the island should pass to the Washington administration and had not ruled out the option of using military force in line with this goal. These statements drew the reaction of Denmark and other European countries and caused tension between the US and its European allies.
