The deadline for replacing old-style driver's licenses will end at the end of the year. As of January 1, 2025, drivers who take to the roads without renewing their licenses will face a fine of 13,000 lira. On the other hand, appointments at the population offices are being rejected due to 100% occupancy.

The General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs announced that the deadline for renewing driver's licenses issued before January 1, 2016, is December 31, 2024. It was stated that after this date, old driver's licenses will lose their validity.

PENALTIES WILL BE APPLIED

The Ministry of Interior stated that a fine of 12,978 lira will be imposed on drivers who will take to the roads with old-type driver's licenses as of January 1, 2025.

APPOINTMENTS NOT AVAILABLE

Despite the warnings, the countdown has begun for over 2 million drivers who have not yet renewed their licenses. Drivers with 47 days left to renew their licenses flocked to the population directorates. However, appointment requests made through the website of the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs are being rejected due to 100% occupancy. In many districts of major cities such as Izmir and Ankara, outside of Istanbul, appointments at population directorates are also 100% full. The intensity is expected to increase even more with the arrival of December.

WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED TO RENEW A DRIVER'S LICENSE?

Citizens are required to provide a health report, one biometric photo, and a renewal fee of 15 lira for the driver's license application.
