The Personal Data Protection Authority (KVKK) imposed an administrative fine of 1 million 470 thousand lira on the social media platform X (Twitter) for violating provisions related to data security.
KVKK initiated an ex officio investigation based on the announcement published on X's website stating that "email addresses or phone numbers obtained from users for security and safety purposes were mistakenly used for advertising purposes" and related news, under the Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698.
Considering that the processed personal data may have been accessed by third parties and that the number of X users in Turkey is very high, KVKK determined that processing personal data obtained for security purposes for advertising activities is contrary to the principles of "being lawful and in accordance with the rules of honesty" and "being related, limited, and proportionate to the purpose for which they are processed" as stated in the law.
KVKK decided to impose an administrative fine of 1 million 470 thousand lira on X, which unlawfully processed personal data and failed to take necessary technical and administrative measures to ensure an adequate level of security as stipulated in the law No. 6698, and did not fulfill its obligations regarding data security.
