According to an incident recounted by Sergeant Ömer, who served in Göle in 1984, during an excavation conducted because the villagers' animals were not allowed to pass a certain point in the Karıncadüzü area, the perfectly preserved body of a captain who had fallen as a martyr approximately 90 years ago was discovered. After reaching the body, which was protected along with the martyr's weapon and insignia, a memorial tomb was constructed in the area. The sergeant described the event by saying, "The sheep alerted us to the martyr's funeral."

Ömer Asteğmen, who served as an artillery sergeant in the Göle district of Ardahan today, recounted the event that took place in 1984 and has been etched in memories.

THEY SUBMITTED A PETITION

The villagers reported the situation to the battalion commander by petition, stating that while grazing their animals in the area called Karıncadüzü, the herds split into two when they reached a certain point, and no animal stepped into that area.

EXCAVATION WAS CONDUCTED ON SUSPICION

When the villagers conveyed that they learned from their elders that such behaviors had been observed in lands where martyrs were found in the past, the battalion commander ordered an excavation in the area. During the excavation, the remains of a captain who was determined to have fallen as a martyr approximately 90 years ago were found.

HE REMAINED WITH HIS RANKS AND WEAPON

Ömer Asteğmen stated that the remains were almost completely unspoiled, and that his ranks and weapon were still present. It was also reported that the weapon was integrated with the martyr's hand and that it was quite difficult to remove.

A MONUMENTAL GRAVE WAS BUILT

A monumental grave was constructed in the area for the found martyr captain. The most striking aspect of the event was that the sign that led to the excavation was the instinctive behaviors of the animals. Ömer Asteğmen summarized the event that has been etched in memories with the words, "The sheep informed us that it was a martyr's funeral."
