The "Hijab Law" proposal, which includes mandatory headscarves and is expected to come into effect in Iran these days, has been reported to be halted by the National Security High Council. THE HIJAB LAW HAS BEEN HALTED IN IRANAli Rıza Selimi, a member of the Iranian Parliament's Presiding Board, spoke to the official news agency IRNA and provided information about the controversial bill. Selimi stated, "This proposal was sent by the previous government (the Ibrahim Raisi government). Today, the Secretariat of the High National Security Council requested the halt of the announcement process for this law. Instead, it has been stated that a revised version of the proposal will be presented to the parliament by the government." REFORMISTS HAVE REACTED TO THE BILLThe law, known as the "Hijab Law," which has been discussed between the Iranian Parliament and the Guardian Council for some time, was expected to come into effect on December 13, aiming to promote the culture of modesty and hijab to support families. Reformists in the country reacted to the draft law and called for the prevention of the law by the reformist politician Mesud Pezeshkiyan, who heads the government. CONTENT OF THE PROPOSALThe law prepared during the conservative Ibrahim Raisi government consists of 72 articles, and women who do not comply with the law will face fines ranging from 71 dollars to approximately 2,350 dollars. Those who do not pay the fine within 10 days will not be served in government offices and banks, and they will also be unable to obtain passports, vehicle registrations, and driving licenses. MAHSA AMINI PROTESTSThe protests that began after the death of Mahsa Amini, who was detained on September 13, 2022, for violating the mandatory headscarf rule, lasted for about 4 months and resulted in the deaths of more than 500 people. After the events calmed down, it was observed that some women in metropolitan cities like Tehran did not comply with the headscarf in public areas, shopping centers, cafes, banks, schools, and streets, which provoked reactions from radical conservative politicians in the country.
