During the Day of the Dead celebrations held in Mexico, a mayor was shot and killed in front of the public. Mayor Carlos Manzo was fighting against drug cartels.
During the "Day of the Dead" celebration held in Mexico, a mayor was shot and killed in front of the public.
According to eyewitnesses, as people were praying with candles in front of the church, gunshots were suddenly heard. While everyone panicked and fled, Mayor Carlos Manzo collapsed to the ground in a pool of blood.
45-year-old Manzo was shot around 8:00 PM on Saturday evening. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition but could not be saved despite all efforts.
At the time of the incident, Manzo's wife and young son were also with him. The attack occurred in the center of Uruapan, in the state of Michoacán, right in front of a church.
Authorities have detained two individuals believed to be involved in the attack, and it was also reported that one assailant was killed during the confrontation. A firearm was seized at the scene.
Michoacán Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla confirmed Manzo's death. Federal security forces stated that the motive for the attack is still unknown.
He had declared war on drug cartels
Manzo had been fighting against drug gangs for a long time. In recent months, he had called on Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to send more soldiers and support to stop the violence in the city.
Manzo was previously a member of Sheinbaum's party, Morena, but he left the party last year to run as an independent candidate. He had expressed his discontent with the government, stating, "We will start a real war against organized crime."
In a video he shared in June, wearing a bulletproof vest and patrolling with local police, he said:
"We cannot wait for them to come and find us; we must stop them."
Increasing political murders in Mexico raise concerns
The state of Michoacán has become one of the most dangerous regions in Mexico in recent years. Conflicts between drug cartels have turned cities into battlefields.
Just a few days before Manzo's murder, farmer leader Bernardo Bravo, who openly spoke against the cartels, was also killed in an armed attack.
This incident has become the latest example of the increasing political murders in Mexico. The public will demand justice for Manzo and action against the cartels by organizing protest marches across the country on November 15.
In just the last few months, three different mayors have been killed in similar attacks in Mexico. This situation has raised serious concerns about the safety of politicians in the country.
