Istanbul residents are eagerly awaiting the first snowfall of the season in the megacity. CNN Türk Meteorology Consultant Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen, in his assessment of the weather, stated that snow is "certain" and provided a date for its arrival.
"SNOW WILL DEFINITELY COME AROUND THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH"
Orhan Şen said, "Snow will come to Istanbul, but when it will arrive is always a matter of curiosity. We said it wouldn't come at New Year's, and it didn't. We were saying it would come around the 10th or 11th of the month, but the system seems to be delayed. It looks like it will stay in the Balkans. Snow will definitely come to Istanbul around the middle of January. Istanbul's winter is in January and February anyway; it doesn't snow much in December. So far, it has snowed in Istanbul on two New Year's." he stated.
"A SOUTHERLY WIND IS COMING FROM TUESDAY"
Noting that there is no snowfall expected this week and next week, Şen said, "A southerly wind will dominate from Tuesday. The air temperature will rise by 4-5 degrees. The temperature will reach up to 15-16 degrees. Today, there is snowfall in the eastern Anatolia and the inner parts of the Eastern Black Sea." he said.
"WE WILL BE EXPOSED TO AIR POLLUTION"
The meteorology expert, who stated that 120 kilograms of rain fell per square meter in Datça yesterday, said, "As that rain moves eastward, it turned into snow. We will be under the influence of high pressure, and we will be exposed to air pollution. There will be air pollution in cities with heavy traffic. There will be nitrogen pollution around Kadıköy, Üsküdar, and Kartal. We will also see air pollution around Bahçelievler in Ankara. In the coming days, we will discuss this air pollution." he stated.
"SNOW IS COMING TO ANATOLIA"
Orhan Şen said, "Snow is coming to Anatolia, where there is quite a high elevation. Snow will come to the west around the middle of this month, but that is not certain; however, it will definitely snow in Istanbul. There is a possibility of snow in Istanbul in mid-January and February." he stated.
