The discussions that arose following the approval of the request to change the name of Devlet Bahçeli City Square to Atatürk City Square during the Manisa Metropolitan Municipality Council meeting led to tense moments in the city.

During the Manisa Metropolitan Municipality Council meeting, the MHP and AK Party groups left the council in response to the request made by the Salihli Municipality to change the name of the Devlet Bahçeli City Square to Atatürk City Square.

The regular meeting of the Manisa Metropolitan Municipality Council in November was held under the chairmanship of Manisa Metropolitan Mayor Ferdi Zeyrek. A proposal was submitted by Salihli Mayor Mazlum Nurlu to change the name of Salihli Devlet Bahçeli City Square to Atatürk City Square.

MHP AND AK PARTY GROUP LEFT THE COUNCIL

MHP Group Deputy Chairman Mehmet Palabıyık and AK Party Group Deputy Chairman Berk Mersinli reacted to the proposal. They stated that they would leave the council if the proposal was accepted to be put on the agenda. AK Party Group Chairman Berk Mersinli also took the floor, stating that the decision made would be a very wrong decision and that this attitude should be abandoned. Following the acceptance of the proposal to be put on the agenda, the MHP and AK Party groups left the council.

AGENDA ITEM WAS ACCEPTED

After the voting, the request of Salihli Municipality to change the name of Devlet Bahçeli City Square to Atatürk City Square was put to a vote. The agenda item was accepted unanimously.

TENSION SPILLED INTO THE STREETS

Following the acceptance of the proposal, discussions between CHP and MHP members spilled out of the municipal council hall and reflected onto the streets of Manisa. Members of the Ülkü Ocakları gathered in front of the municipal building to protest against Mayor Zeyrek. Meanwhile, police teams, who took intense security measures in the area, dispatched additional teams to prevent the situation from escalating.
