THE UNITED NATIONS (UN) General Assembly approved a $3.72 billion UN budget prepared to tackle the issues faced by the international community in 2025. In a written statement from the UN's website, it was reported that during the session held yesterday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' proposed 2025 budget presented on October 16 was approved, and a new program was also accepted to "support landlocked developing countries." It was noted that approximately $1 million was added to the approved budget according to Guterres' proposal.
The statement included, "The UN's 2025 budget finances UN programs in key areas such as political affairs, international justice and law, regional cooperation for development, human rights, humanitarian assistance, and public information."
The statement pointed out that the UN has a separate budget for "peacekeeping operations," and it was noted that the General Assembly also approved a "10-year action plan" to support landlocked developing countries during the same session.
ALLOCATIONS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS IN THE MIDDLE EAST HAVE INCREASED
In the UN's 2025 budget, additional funds were included to combat the humanitarian crisis, especially in regions like Gaza and Syria, in the Middle East. With the acceptance of the proposal made by Secretary-General Guterres on October 16 as it was, an additional $3.5 million was provided for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Additionally, the proposed $2.5 million in extra aid for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, which is vital for Palestinian refugees, was also accepted.
In the budget proposal allocating $50 million to the Peacebuilding Fund to address the UN's funding gaps, $8 million was requested for the UN Human Rights Office, and $8.3 million was requested to support the work of the Independent Institution for Missing Persons in Syria.
