The world is talking about a new virus that started spreading from China. The new virus, named HPMV (Human Metapneumovirus), manifests with symptoms similar to the common cold and flu. Claims that the virus, which can lead to serious symptoms especially in children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, has caused a surge in hospitals in China have resonated widely on social media. FIRST DETECTED IN 2001First detected in 2001, HPMV is recognized as a virus that has been circulating globally for years. The virus, which has rapidly spread in recent weeks, has become more prevalent with the winter season. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the situation in China is normal and that hospitals are not being overwhelmed. However, experts warn that the simultaneous spread of multiple viruses could strain the healthcare system. HAS IT BEEN SEEN IN TURKEY?Prof. Dr. Tevfik Özlü, a member of the Coronavirus Science Board of the Ministry of Health and a specialist in Chest Diseases, spoke about the cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) recently observed in China, which are causing respiratory infections, following the coronavirus pandemic that shook the world. Emphasizing that the reports of increased human metapneumovirus cases in China and the claims of overcrowding in hospitals are uncertain, Prof. Dr. Özlü stated, "Human metapneumovirus is a virus we have known since 2001. It primarily causes upper respiratory infections in humans. These are mostly infections like the common cold and flu. It can also lead to diseases such as bronchitis in the lower respiratory tract. "NO WARNING FROM WHO"Severe pneumonia can sometimes occur as well. Recently, I have been seeing numerous reports in the media about many cases of human metapneumovirus in China, and claims of congestion and crowding in hospitals. The accuracy of these reports and their relevance to current situations are also questionable. China has not yet made such a statement. The World Health Organization has no warning regarding this matter," he said. "NO ABNORMAL SITUATION"Prof. Dr. Tevfik Özlü noted that the Ministry of Health in Turkey regularly monitors the mentioned virus within its screening system, stating, "It is very normal to experience a viral increase in such infections seasonally. This is not an unexpected situation. This virus, like other respiratory viruses, causes an increase in infections during the winter months. The Ministry of Health in Turkey is also screening for this virus within its monitoring system. Regular samples are taken from every region of Turkey. There is currently no abnormal situation in Turkey. I do not see any developments that would cause panic. Seasonal infections caused by such viruses can be encountered. There is also no information regarding whether the virus that is the source of these reports is a new virus. This virus is one that we see cyclically. It needs to be monitored closely," he said.
