In the city of Lugo, Spain, Tono Pineiro, who started renovating his house, found old pesetas worth approximately £47,000 (€2.7 million) in boxes that came out from the wall. However, most of the pesetas turned out to be worthless because they lost their validity after the transition to the euro and were not accepted by banks. Pineiro was only able to exchange the coins in better condition for euros, resulting in €32,000 (€1.6 million).
Tono Pineiro, who lives in Lugo, Spain, made an unexpected discovery while renovating the house he bought to spend his retirement years. As he broke the wall with a sledgehammer, six boxes of Nesquik emerged from inside. The amount hidden in the boxes was old pesetas worth approximately £47,000 (2.7 million). Pineiro was overjoyed, thinking that the money he found was a real fortune that had been hidden in the house for years.
PESETAS WITHDRAWN FROM CIRCULATION
However, according to The Mirror, his joy was short-lived. Pesetas had been withdrawn from circulation with Spain's transition to the euro in 2002. Moreover, some of the banknotes had deteriorated so much over the years that they did not meet the conditions for exchange by banks. Bank officials informed Pineiro that the deadline for converting pesetas to euros had passed, and a significant portion of the money was now worthless.
THE MONEY HE RECEIVED IS 1 MILLION 600 THOUSAND LIRA
Still, Pineiro sorted the pesetas one by one, took those in better condition to the bank, and managed to convert a portion of this amount into euros. The total money he received was approximately €32,000 (1 million 600 thousand). He decided to keep the worn pesetas, which could not be converted into value, as "a memory of the house's past."
