The proportion of those with debt or installment payments, excluding housing purchases and housing expenses, decreased by 1.2 points compared to last year, standing at 56.8%. When looking at the poverty rates calculated based on 50% of the equivalent household disposable median income by household type; the poverty rate in single-person households decreased by 0.8 points compared to the previous year, reaching 6.5%, while in households consisting of more than one person without a nuclear family, it increased by 3.1 points to 10.8%. The poverty rate in households consisting of at least one nuclear family and other individuals increased by 0.9 points to 17.9%, while the poverty rate in households consisting of a single nuclear family increased by 0.1 points to 13.4%.
THE HIGHEST POVERTY RATE WAS OBSERVED AMONG THOSE WHO DID NOT COMPLETE ANY SCHOOL
According to the poverty rate calculated based on 50% of the equivalent household disposable median income; 24.7% of those who did not complete any school, 13.6% of those with less than high school education, and 7.4% of high school and equivalent graduates were calculated as poor. University graduates had the lowest poverty rate at 2.7%.
MATERIAL AND SOCIAL DEPRIVATION RATE WAS 13.3%
In the calculation of the material and social deprivation rate, the variables questioned at the household level include; car ownership, ability to make unexpected expenses, ability to cover the cost of a week's vacation away from home, ability to pay rent, housing loans, and interest debts, ability to eat meals containing meat, chicken, or fish every other day, ability to meet the heating needs of the house, and ability to replace furniture when it wears out.
The variables collected at the individual level for this rate include; ability to buy new clothes instead of worn-out ones, having at least two pairs of proper shoes, ability to gather with acquaintances at least once a month, ability to participate in paid leisure activities, ability to spend some money to feel good, and ownership of the internet for personal use. The material and social deprivation rate, defined as the proportion of those who cannot meet at least seven of the thirteen items mentioned above, was estimated to be 13.3% in 2024, decreasing by 1.1 points from 14.4% in 2023.
THE CONTINUOUS POVERTY RATE WAS 13.7%
The continuous poverty rate, calculated using four years of panel data, includes individuals who were poor in the last year and at least in two of the previous three years, based on 60% of the equivalent household disposable median income. Accordingly, the continuous poverty rate for 2024 increased by 0.7 points compared to the previous year, reaching 13.7%.
THE LOWEST RELATIVE POVERTY RATE WAS OBSERVED IN THE GAZIANTEP, ADIYAMAN, AND KILIS REGION
According to the poverty threshold calculated based on 50% of the equivalent household disposable median income for each of the IBBS Level 2 regions, the regions with the highest income-based relative poverty rate were TR71 (Kırıkkale, Aksaray, Niğde, Nevşehir, Kırşehir) at 14.6% and TR82 (Kastamonu, Çankırı, Sinop) at 12.3%. The IBBS Level 2 regions with the lowest relative poverty rates were TRC1 (Gaziantep, Adıyaman, Kilis) at 4.7% and TRC2 (Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır) at 6.4%.
THE RATE OF THOSE AT RISK OF POVERTY OR SOCIAL EXCLUSION WAS 29.3%
Those at risk of poverty or social exclusion refer to individuals who are deprived of at least one of the indicators of relative poverty, material and social deprivation, and low work intensity.
According to the results of the last year, 29.3% of individuals were at risk of poverty or social exclusion. When this rate is examined by age groups; it was estimated to be 38.9% in the 0-17 age group, 26.3% in the 18-64 age group, and 23.3% in the 65 and older age group.
4.3% OF THE POPULATION COULD NOT ESCAPE POVERTY FOR FOUR YEARS, WHILE 74.8% WERE NEVER POOR
When examining the duration of remaining in poverty calculated based on 50% of the median income using four years of panel data, 10.1% of individuals remained poor for one year within four years, 6.5% for two years, 4.3% for three years, and 4.3% for four years (throughout the panel period). Meanwhile, 74.8% of the population did not fall below the poverty line at all during the four years.
31.3% OF THE POPULATION EXPERIENCES PROBLEMS WITH LEAKY ROOFS, DAMP WALLS, AND ROTTEN WINDOW FRAMES
31.3% of the non-institutional population experiences problems such as leaky roofs, damp walls, rotten window frames, etc., while 30.2% face heating issues due to insulation in their homes, 21.7% encounter air pollution caused by traffic or industry, environmental pollution, or other environmental issues.
THE RATE OF THOSE WITH INSTALLMENT PAYMENTS OR DEBTS WAS 56.8%
Compared to last year, the proportion of those with debt or installment payments, excluding housing purchases and housing expenses, decreased by 1.2 points to 56.8%. While 5.2% of the population reported that these payments do not burden them, 39.1% said it burdens them a little, and 12.5% said it burdens them a lot. The proportion of households for whom housing expenses are a significant burden decreased by 3.9 points to 13.6%, while the proportion of households for whom these expenses are a slight burden increased by 4.7 points to 71.2%. The proportion of households reporting that housing expenses do not burden them was calculated to be 15.2%, a decrease of 0.7 points compared to last year.
57.5% of individuals stated that they could not financially cover the costs of a week's vacation away from home, 39.3% could not cover the costs of meals containing meat, chicken, or fish every other day, 26.8% could not cover unexpected expenses, 15.1% could not cover the heating needs of their homes, and 59.6% could not afford to renew worn-out furniture.
THE RATE OF THOSE LIVING IN THEIR OWN HOMES WAS 56.1%
The proportion of those who own the house they live in decreased by 0.1 points compared to last year, calculated to be 56.1% in 2024, while the proportion of those renting was 28.0%, those living in dormitories was 0.9%, and those not living in their own homes but not paying rent was 15.0%.
