The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, which previously rejected businesses' requests for price increases, announced that starting from January 1, 2026, the price of the paid plastic bag system it has been implementing since 2019 will be raised from 25 kuruş to 1 lira. This initiative was launched to reduce plastic waste pollution and to achieve zero waste goals.

The price of plastic bags, which started to be sold for 25 kuruş with the implementation launched by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change in 2019, has been set at 1 lira as of January 1, 2026.

INCREASE IN PLASTIC BAG PRICES

As part of the ministry's efforts to prevent plastic waste pollution, plastic bags became chargeable as of January 1, 2019. By promoting the transition from single-use plastic bags to reusable carrying equipment, it contributed to the efficient use of resources and the zero waste goals.

To determine the plastic bag fee to be applied in the new year, a "Packaging Commission - Plastic Bag Sub-Commission Meeting" was held on November 12, with the participation of relevant public institutions and organizations, as well as representatives from associations and federations operating in the sector.

1 LIRA AS OF JANUARY 1

As a result of the meeting, taking into account the opinions and suggestions of the participants, it was decided that the base fee to be applied to plastic bags in 2026 would be 1 lira per unit, including taxes. This decision will be effective as of January 1, 2026.

2.8 MILLION TONS OF WASTE PREVENTED

According to the data from the beginning of the application in 2019 to the first 9 months of 2025, a total of 2 million 844 thousand 596 tons of plastic waste generated from plastic bags was prevented. With this reduction, the import of raw plastic materials necessary for plastic bag production was also avoided, resulting in a savings of approximately 28 billion lira and preventing the emission of 167 thousand 984 tons of greenhouse gases.
