The President of the Turkish Union of Agricultural Chambers (TZOB), Şemsi Bayraktar, stated that in 2024, there was a price increase in 40 out of 41 products tracked in the market, while there was a decrease in 1 product.

The President of the Turkish Union of Agricultural Chambers (TZOB), Şemsi Bayraktar, stated that in 2024, there was a price increase in 40 out of 41 products tracked in the market, while one product saw a decrease. In his written statement, Bayraktar evaluated the differences in producer and market input prices compared to the previous month and throughout 2024.

WHITE CABBAGE AND MANDARIN CHAMPION OF PRICE INCREASE

Bayraktar reported that, as in previous years, they compiled data on price differences between producers and markets from agricultural chambers across the country. "As a result of our evaluations, in 2024, there was a price increase in 40 out of 41 products tracked in the market, and a price decrease in one product. The product with the highest price increase in 2024 was white cabbage in the market and mandarin at the producer level, while the product with the highest price decrease was potatoes in both the market and producer levels," he shared. Bayraktar noted that last year, the highest price increase in the market compared to the previous year was seen in white cabbage at 179.1%, followed by mandarin at 135%, eggplant and leek at 115.2%, and lemon at 98.5%.

POTATOES BECAME THE PRODUCT WITH THE HIGHEST PRICE DECREASE

Bayraktar pointed out that the product with the highest price decrease in the market during the relevant period was potatoes, with a decrease of 16%. He reported that in 2024, prices of 29 out of 33 products tracked at the producer level increased, while 4 decreased.

Bayraktar emphasized that in 2024, the highest price increase at the producer level compared to the previous year was seen in mandarins at 276.5%, and shared the following: The price increase in mandarins was followed by cauliflower at 270.4%, white cabbage at 166.2%, and leek at 153%. This year, the highest price decrease at the producer level compared to the previous year was seen in potatoes at 59.8%. The price decrease in potatoes was followed by olive oil at 20.7%, pistachios at 9.4%, and dried apricots at 3.6%. This year, there was a 21.1% increase in potato production. This increase in production particularly caused the producer prices of potatoes to remain below those of the previous year. There was an increase in the supply of olive oil, pistachios, and dried apricots, leading to prices falling below those of the previous year. In December 2024, the price difference between producers and markets was highest for lemons at 312.3%, followed by potatoes at 300.8%, oranges at 270%, and carrots at 237.2%.

PRODUCTS WITH THE HIGHEST PRICE INCREASE IN DECEMBER; WHITE CABBAGE IN THE MARKET, EGGPLANT AT THE PRODUCER LEVEL

Bayraktar mentioned that lemons were sold in the market at 4.1 times, potatoes at 4 times, oranges at 3.7 times, and carrots at 3.4 times their producer prices. He stated that lemons, priced at 7 lira at the producer level, reached consumers at 30 lira, potatoes priced at 4 lira reached 18 lira, oranges at 10 lira reached 37 lira, and carrots at 11 lira reached 37 lira. Bayraktar reported that the product with the highest price increase in December was white cabbage in the market and eggplant at the producer level, while the product with the highest price decrease was cauliflower in the market and potatoes at the producer level.

Bayraktar noted that in December, there was a price increase in 24 out of 41 products in the market and a price decrease in 17 products, stating, "The product with the highest price increase in the market in December was white cabbage at 75.6%. This was followed by eggplant at 43%, green onions at 30.2%, and lettuce at 16.6%. The product with the most significant price decrease in the market was cauliflower at 35.5%. The price decrease in cauliflower was followed by tomatoes at 13.6%, bell peppers at 7.6%, and zucchini at 6.3%."

IN DECEMBER, 15 PRODUCTS INCREASED IN PRICE, 9 DECREASED

Bayraktar reported that in December, there was a price increase in 15 out of 33 products at the producer level, while 9 saw a decrease, and there was no change in the others. He noted that the highest price decrease at the producer level in December was seen in potatoes at 27.9%, followed by oranges at 25.3%, lemons at 11.2%, and mandarins at 11.1%.

"LOW PRODUCER PRICES HAVE CRAMPED PRODUCTION AREAS"

Bayraktar stated that the highest price increase at the producer level was seen in eggplants at 89.2%, followed by green onions at 44.5%, white cabbage at 42.3%, and cauliflower at 31.6%. He expressed:

"The reason for the increase in eggplant prices at the producer level is the decrease in product supply. The decrease in supply and the increase in demand have also caused prices to rise for green onions, white cabbage, and cauliflower at the producer level. The decrease in yield per unit area during the winter season in greenhouse production, the low producer prices of winter vegetables in the previous year, and the increase in costs have cramped production areas. Natural disasters occurring in our coastal areas, where greenhouse production is intensive, and regions with high planting of winter vegetables have negatively affected production, leading to an increase in producer prices. The increase in supply last year due to high yields in potatoes caused prices to fall."

Bayraktar also addressed input prices, noting that there have been increases in fertilizers, feed, agricultural chemicals, electricity, and diesel.
