Senem Ece Mazı, who lost her husband and daughter in the earthquake in the İskenderun district of Hatay, experienced the shock of her life upon learning that the prosthetic leg she had fitted to replace the one she lost in the disaster was sold to her as second-hand for 650,000 TL, despite being described as brand new.

In Hatay, which was most affected by the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş, nearly 25,000 people lost their lives, and thousands of buildings were destroyed. Senem Ece Mazı, who was caught in the earthquake in the İskenderun district, lost her 41-year-old husband Doğan Mazı, her 5-year-old daughter Derin Mazı, and her 72-year-old mother-in-law Naz Mazı in the rubble of their home.

LEARNED THE TRUTH WHEN THE PROSTHESIS WAS DAMAGED

Mazı, who was rescued from the rubble of the same building 7 hours later, had her right foot amputated and became unable to use her right arm. After the treatment process, the woman regained her health, and with the support of a charitable citizen, a prosthetic leg was fitted for 650,000 TL in place of her amputated leg. However, she learned the truth about the prosthetic leg, which she received for 650,000 TL from individuals who introduced themselves as medical company staff, when the prosthesis was damaged and she wanted to send it for repair.

Mazı, who is fighting for her life with her daughter, who lost her right arm in the earthquake and has been her companion in holding on to life, stated that she would fight to prove the injustice she faced, claiming that she learned from the medical company officials that the prosthesis was sold to her as new but was actually second-hand.

"I LEARNED IT WAS SECOND-HAND WHEN I STARTED TO RESEARCH"

Mazı, who was trapped under the rubble for 7 hours and lost her right leg, said, "I was rescued from the rubble 7 hours after the earthquake on February 6. When I came out of the rubble, I lost my leg there, and my arm was in two pieces. I had a very long hospital process afterward. I lost my husband, my 5-year-old daughter, and my mother-in-law who was visiting us in my home. I encountered the people from whom I received this prosthesis in the hospital. I thought they would help me, and at that time we were doing price research. This was the place that offered the best price. That's why we applied here and talked. I fell while the prosthesis was attached, and it broke because of that. I called the place I bought it from because it was broken, but I couldn't reach them. While I was starting to research why there was no warranty for the prosthesis that I hadn't even used for a year, I learned that it was second-hand," she said.

"THEY SOLD ME A PROSTHESIS THEY BOUGHT FOR 80-90 THOUSAND TL FOR 650 THOUSAND TL"

Mazı, who claims that the prosthesis, which has a market value of approximately 90,000 TL, was sold to her for 650,000 TL at a new price, said, "I called my donor beforehand, and they told me there was no warranty. When I inquired about the reason, they said, 'It doesn't fall under warranty because you fell.' They later told me, 'This prosthesis was used by someone in 2015, and because it was used, the warranty for this prosthesis has expired.' They also told me that it was discontinued in 2015, which is why you are having such difficulties.' They sold me a prosthesis that they bought for 80-90 thousand TL for 650 thousand TL. They probably think that I can't prove anything because I didn't sign anything, but in the money sent by my donor, my name, surname, and prosthesis money are visible. I am trying to achieve something based on that because I will also have to buy such prostheses for my daughter in the future since her arm is also amputated," she expressed.
