The revelation lists showing that many brands include horse and donkey meat in their products have prompted action from ministry officials.

Stating that a new era has begun following the developments that have drawn significant public backlash, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı announced that with the updated regulation that is in the publication phase, the use of surveillance systems in slaughterhouses will become mandatory.

NO OPERATION PERMIT WITHOUT DOCUMENTATION

Emphasizing that slaughterhouses are not allowed to operate without obtaining an approval document, Minister Yumaklı also provided information regarding the updated and forthcoming "Special Hygiene Rules Regulation for Animal Products."

"WE PLAN TO PUBLISH THE UPDATED REGULATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE"

Speaking to Türkiye newspaper, Minister Yumaklı stated, "We have updated the currently effective 'Special Hygiene Rules Regulation for Animal Products' to establish high-resolution surveillance systems that can record for at least one month and can be monitored live by our ministry's relevant units, in order to monitor live animals, carcasses, by-products, and personnel movements in slaughterhouses. These systems will provide a wide-angle view of all areas where animals are held, slaughtered, and other processes are carried out. We plan to publish the updated regulation as soon as possible. As a result of this legal arrangement, all process steps related to animal welfare, slaughtering, and personnel behavior before and after slaughter will be continuously and regularly monitored by food operators and our ministry's relevant units," he stated.

"HYGIENE RULES COMPLIANT OPERATIONS WILL BE MONITORED"

Minister Yumaklı expressed that they will make the installation of video systems in slaughterhouses mandatory this year, emphasizing that the new application will prevent slaughtering outside the declared days and hours to the ministry, and added: "The slaughter of unidentified animals without ear tags will be prevented. Appropriate behavior for animal welfare will be ensured before and during slaughter. Hygiene rules compliant operations will be monitored before and after slaughter. We continue our efforts in many areas, especially food safety and animal welfare."
