A mother in England was convicted of "serious neglect." The mother, who hid her baby in a drawer under her bed for nearly three years, was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison. The baby found in a house in Cheshire had matted hair, deformities, and rashes on her body when she was discovered just weeks before her third birthday. The little girl had never seen daylight until that time. The "ruthless" mother hid the baby even from her own siblings and her boyfriend, who frequently stayed at the house. The mother's name was not disclosed to protect the identity of the children. The baby was accidentally found by the mother's boyfriend. When he returned home to go to the bathroom, he checked one of the rooms after hearing a noise and saw the baby. Social services immediately took action after he reported the situation to the family. A social worker testified in court: "The mother said she kept the baby in the drawer quite normally. I was shocked by her lack of emotion and indifference to the situation. I was probably the only face she had seen other than her mother." Judge Steven Everett said, "What you did was incredibly ruthless. You deprived this little girl of love, care, interaction with other people, proper nutrition, and the medical care she desperately needed." The defense attorney stated that the mother had mental health issues and faced difficulties during the Covid-19 quarantine. The mother admitted to four counts of child abuse.
