A verdict has been reached in the case regarding the armed attack in Gaziantep, where five people lost their lives due to a dispute over vehicle parking between two neighbors. The court sentenced the defendant Cevdet D to four life sentences, totaling 92 years in prison.
The hearing for the case regarding the armed attack that broke out after a parking dispute in Gaziantep, resulting in the death of 5 people, was held at the Gaziantep 11th Heavy Penal Court. The victims' relatives, defendants, defense lawyers, and victims' lawyers were present at the hearing. The victims' families demanded the harshest punishment for the perpetrators.
In his defense, defendant Cevdet D. said, 'I absolutely did not see my brother Cengiz, I regret it, I request my acquittal and release.'
Defendant İbrahim D. stated, 'I did not act with the intention of killing anyone; I was trying to save myself.'
OPINION ANNOUNCED
The public prosecutor announced his opinion on the merits. The prosecutor stated that defendants İbrahim D. and Cevdet D. actively used weapons in the incident and demanded they be sentenced to heavy penalties. In the opinion, it was stated that İbrahim D. killed Hüseyin Yıldız by shooting at close range and also wounded Leyla K. and Cengiz Ç. with a weapon. The prosecutor requested the defendant be punished for 'intentional killing' and 'intentional wounding with a weapon.' The prosecutor also stated that Cevdet D. killed Metin Korkmaz, Mehmet Korkmaz, Faik Korkmaz, and Adem Yıldız by shooting from the balcony and then at close range, and that he also caused the death of his brother Cengiz D. with possible intent, demanding the defendant be sentenced to multiple aggravated life imprisonment and life imprisonment. The prosecutor requested acquittal for the other defendants, Mesut Ç., Ayvaz Yakup D., Ayvaz D., and Safinaz D., due to lack of sufficient and definitive evidence.
SENTENCE ANNOUNCED
The court panel sentenced defendant Cevdet D. to 4 life imprisonments for killing Adem Yıldız, Metin Korkmaz, Faik Korkmaz, and Mehmet Korkmaz. The court applied a deduction for unjust provocation, reducing the sentence to 18 years in prison for each crime. The panel also ruled that Cevdet D. caused the death of his brother Cengiz D. with possible intent and sentenced him to life imprisonment. However, applying the acquired rights provisions due to a previous decision, it was decided that the sentence would be served over 20 years. The court sentenced İbrahim D. to life imprisonment for killing Hüseyin Yıldız. The sentence was reduced to 18 years in prison by applying a deduction for unjust provocation.
Regarding the other defendants, an acquittal was decided due to 'lack of definitive and convincing evidence.' The court also ordered the confiscation of weapons used in the incident and the continuation of detention for the arrested defendants.
BACKGROUND OF THE INCIDENT
In the armed fight between neighbors over a parking lot in Gaziantep, 3 people died and 5 were injured.
The incident occurred in the evening hours in the 75th Year Neighborhood of Şahinbey district. According to the claim, a dispute arose between two neighbors over vehicle parking. After the argument escalated, a fight broke out between the two neighbors in which weapons were also used. In the armed fight involving a shotgun and a pistol, 26-year-old Faik Korkmaz, 36-year-old Hüseyin Yıldız, and 27-year-old Adem Yıldız lost their lives, while Cengiz Demir, Ayvaz Yakup Demir, Mehmet Korkmaz, Leyla Korkmaz, and Metin Korkmaz were injured. The injured were taken to city hospitals by ambulances called to the scene. It was learned that the injured Cengiz Demir and Mehmet Korkmaz were in critical condition. The bodies of Faik Korkmaz, Hüseyin Yıldız, and Adem Yıldız, who lost their lives, were sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute morgue for autopsy. Police took extensive security measures at the scene and did not allow anyone near the area. Crime scene investigation teams collected evidence at the scene. Cevdet D. and İbrahim D., who were involved in the armed fight, fled after the incident. Homicide Bureau teams had initiated efforts to capture the fugitive suspects.
