The state visit of Sultan of Oman, His Majesty Haitham bin Tarik, to Turkey on November 28-29 is expected to further strengthen the deep-rooted relations between the two countries. During the meetings, which will be the first visit of an Omani Sultan to Turkey after nearly 40 years, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will discuss the expansion of cooperation in trade, investment, education, defense, and other areas. Trade relations between Oman and Turkey are showing stable growth. According to the National Center for Statistics and Information, the bilateral trade volume exceeded 216 million Omani Rials in the first eight months of 2024, showing an increase compared to the same period in 2023 (208 million Rials). Turkey is Oman's 17th largest partner in non-oil trade and the largest buyer in Europe for Oman's non-oil exports. By the end of 2023, a total of 423 Turkish companies with an investment value exceeding 100 million Rials were operating in Oman. These companies contribute to significant infrastructure projects, including airports, ports, roads, and dams, by working in sectors such as construction, industry, retail, and logistics. Oman's investments in Turkey reached 75 million Rials through 36 companies in 2022. Tourism is another developing area of cooperation. Thanks to the mutual visa exemption agreement in 2022, more than 130,000 Omani tourists visited Turkey. Efforts are ongoing for Turkish tourists to explore Oman's rich cultural and natural beauties. The two countries are also developing their relations in the field of education and research. The memorandum of understanding signed in October covers scholarships, mutual recognition of higher education institutions, and joint initiatives in science, technology, and education. Oman's Ambassador to Turkey, Saif Rashid al Juhwari, emphasized the importance of the visit, describing it as a "new era" in the historical relations between the two countries, and stated, "A series of agreements will be signed to enhance cooperation in areas such as politics, economy, defense, transportation, communication, energy, health, and the development of SMEs." Turkey's Ambassador to Oman, Mehmet Hakimoğlu, also agreed with Juhwari's views, stating, "This historic visit will make a significant contribution to strengthening bilateral relations. We look forward to signing various agreements, especially in the fields of politics, economy, culture, and defense."
