A decision to impose a rehabilitation program instead of prison sentences on child defendants in a sexual assault case against two girls in the UK has sparked nationwide debate.
According to the Daily Express, the court’s ruling drew public backlash, while the victim’s live broadcast remarks were brought onto the political agenda. During the victim’s account of her experiences on BBC, Cabinet Office Minister Darren Jones became emotional.
SEXUAL ASSAULT FOOTAGE RECORDED AND SHARED
In the case heard at Southampton Crown Court, it was stated that two separate incidents occurred in the Fordingbridge area of Hampshire.
The first incident reportedly took place on November 26, 2024, when a 15-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by two boys, while a third child watched.
In the second incident on January 17, 2025, another 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by three boys. It was reported that footage of both incidents was recorded and later shared online.
The prosecution emphasized that the spread of the footage caused severe psychological harm to the victims.
VICTIM GIRL: I ONLY WANTED JUSTICE
Speaking to the BBC, the young victim said the court process became a second trauma for her.
The girl stated, “What was the point of going to court and reliving everything? I only wanted justice, but I feel like nothing has changed.”
Describing the intense pressure from the images circulating on social media, the victim said people blamed her and subjected her to abusive comments.
The victim’s mother also reacted to the defendants not being sent to prison, stating the incident was planned and the ruling was difficult for the family to accept.
MINISTER EMOTIONAL ON LIVE TV
Cabinet Office Minister Darren Jones, appearing on the BBC program Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, struggled to hold back tears after the victim family’s statements.
Jones said that as a parent, no one would want a child to go through such an ordeal, and emphasized that victims deserve justice. He also expressed that young people involved in similar crimes must see the consequences of their actions.
The minister announced that the case is under review and the decision may be appealed.
PRIME MINISTER: “A HORRIFIC CASE”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also commented, describing the victim’s words as “brave and shocking.”
Starmer noted that the victims in the case showed extraordinary courage and said the process of reassessing the sentences is important.
REHABILITATION DECISION INSTEAD OF PRISON FOR DEFENDANTS
The court ordered a youth rehabilitation program and intensive supervision for the two 15-year-old defendants. A similar decision was made regarding the 14-year-old third child involved in the incidents.
In his ruling, the judge highlighted the importance of reintegrating the children into society. The court noted that individual reports on the defendants’ circumstances were also considered in the evaluation.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the UK Crown Prosecution Service has initiated a review of the case, and after the appeal process, the sentences may be reassessed.
