ABOUT THE NOBEL PRIZESEstablished on June 9, 1900, following the will of Swedish Alfred Nobel after his death, the Nobel Foundation awards prizes to those who have served humanity, which are considered the most prestigious awards in the world. The Nobel Prizes are awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Swedish Academy, the Karolinska Institute, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee to individuals or organizations deemed the most successful in five categories: physics, chemistry, literature, peace, and medicine. In addition, the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences was first awarded in 1969, following the decision of the Swedish Central Bank in 1968 to award a prize in economics in memory of Alfred Nobel. The Nobel Prizes are presented annually in a ceremony held on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death. However, there have been a few years since the inception of the awards in 1901 when they were not awarded. Most of the 49 cancellations of the awards occurred during the First and Second World Wars.
