The Provincial Gendarmerie Command teams in Bayburt initiated an operation against the trafficking of historical artifacts and illegal excavation crimes. As a result of the operations, it was revealed that artifacts extracted from the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions were being prepared for sale in western provinces, and some were to be smuggled abroad.
Teams monitoring 21 suspects simultaneously conducted operations at residences, vehicles, and workplaces identified in 14 provinces. During the searches carried out within the scope of the operation, 3,072 coins from the Ottoman period, 178 coins estimated to be about a thousand years old from the Eastern Roman and Byzantine periods, and various historical artifacts were seized.
