Four people in the US have died from the untreatable hantavirus transmitted by mice. The virus kills 38% of patients and is spread through rodent droppings. While normally there are 30 cases per year, there has been an increase in some areas. Experts believe that heatwaves and climate change could be contributing factors. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome can cause respiratory failure by damaging the lungs, with a 50% fatality rate.

This virus kills approximately 38% of patients and spreads through rodent droppings.

Normally causing only about 30 cases per year, the virus is increasing in some areas of the country. In Arizona, six cases and three deaths have been confirmed in the past six months. This number is higher than the total number of cases in the previous six-year period. In California, two cases and one death have also been reported.

Experts believe that heatwaves may play a role in this increase. Professor Dr. Camilo Mora from the University of Hawaii stated that climate change affects the movement of disease-carrying species.

In humans, symptoms such as sudden fever, muscle aches, nausea, and abdominal pain can occur 9-33 days after infection. In some cases, it can progress to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, which has a 50% mortality rate.

This syndrome can cause respiratory failure and death by damaging the blood vessels in the lungs. Treatment involves the use of respiratory devices and intravenous fluid support, but there is no specific treatment or vaccine for the virus.
