The city of Bursa went on high alert to capture the brown bear that escaped from the shelter in the Karacabey district. Search efforts to find the bear, which left footprints in surrounding neighborhoods, continue on the third day.
"TRAPS HAVE BEEN SET, FOOD HAS BEEN LEFT"
Boğazköy Muhtar Şenol Kuş stated in a statement regarding the issue that no results were obtained from the nighttime searches. He noted that due to the area's wetland nature, no traces of the bear were found. Muhtar Kuş said, "Teams searched the area multiple times both day and night. No traces were found. Food was placed in certain locations to capture the bear, and traps were set. Additionally, the road was monitored throughout the night in case the bear might return to the shelter. No traces were found. The efforts are continuing this morning with new teams," he said.
IT HAD ESCAPED FROM THE SHELTER
As part of the 'Freedom for Bears' project, 76 brown bears, including 7 cubs, that were kept under protection at the Ovakorusu Bear Shelter within the Karacabey Ovakorusu Celal Acar Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, which was opened in 2011 to collect bears that were made to perform on the streets for profit and to restore their freedom, continue to live in their natural habitat in an 11-hectare forest. One of the brown bears escaped after the electric iron fence at the shelter was damaged by a tree that fell in the wind.
THE WHOLE CITY MOBILIZED
The incident came to light on Wednesday, January 15, after drivers who saw the bear wandering in the area reported it. After escaping, the brown bear was captured on security cameras next to a trash container in the Boğazköy neighborhood, prompting veterinarians, caregivers from the Celal Acar Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, teams from the 2nd Regional Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, and gendarmerie teams to mobilize.
ANNOUNCEMENTS WERE MADE FROM MOSQUES
While efforts to capture the bear, which was also spotted in surrounding neighborhoods, continue, the public was urged to be cautious and to report immediately to the Karacabey Gendarmerie Command if the bear was seen. The local population was also warned through announcements made from mosques.
