Turkey Helping Pesmerga Access Kobani

20.10.2014 16:33

Turkish Prime Ministry sources say process of aiding peshmerga access to Kobani continues.

Sources from Turkey's Prime Ministry stated that help is ongoing for peshmerga forces attempting to access Kobani to aid in fighting against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL.

They added that humanitarian aid to the war-torn city of Kobani is also ongoing.

Turkey's Foreign Minister Cavusoglu confirmed Monday morning that Turkey is helping peshmerga forces enter Syria to fight ISIL.

"We never wanted Kobani to fall and we are trying to do our best to prevent it," Cavusoglu stated.

The U.S. also carried out an aerial resupply of Kurdish forces in the besieged Turkish-Syrian border town overnight Sunday as Kurdish groups continue to fight against ISIL.

The Turkish foreign minister said Turkey was aware of the U.S. aerial operation and considered it to be "within the scope" of helping Kobani.

The Kurdish-majority border town, which is under the control of the People's Protection Units, or YPG -- the armed wing of the Democratic Union Party, or PYD -- has been the scene of fierce battles between Kurdish groups and ISIL militants since mid-September.
