Turkey Hosts Most İntact Amazon Sarcophagus

1858 year old sarcophagus exhibited in western Kutahya province.

The most intact Amazon sarcophagus in the world has been in displayed at a museum in Turkey's western province of Kutahya.



The sarcophagus with figures of females soldiers fighting Greek soldiers is exhibited at the Kutahya Archaeology Museum.



"It is a 1858-year-old sarcophagus. It is known that there are 20 other sarcophagi in the world. However, the most intact sarcophagus of the world is in Kutahya," Metin Turktuzun, director of Kutahya Museum, told Anadolu Agency.



Turktuzun said the sarcophagus was partly found by treasure hunters in the ancient city of Aizanoi in Cavdarhisar district of Kutahya in 1990.



The museum later rescued the sarcophagus during an excavation and fixed the broken parts, he added.



"We see having the most intact sarcophagus in Kutahya as an important value in terms of tourism and archaeology," Turktuzun said. -
