Turkey, US See Manbij Deal 'Significant' For Syria

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Donald Trump discuss bilateral ties over phone.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the U.S.-Turkey deal on Syria's northeastern Manbij city with his American counterpart Donald Trump over the phone, Turkey's presidential press office said on Monday.

Erdogan and Trump stressed that the common roadmap in Manbij will make a "significant" contribution for resolution of the crisis in Syria, the office said.

The deal was reached between Ankara and Washington in early June, which focused on the withdrawal of the YPG terror group from the city in order to stabilize the region.

The PYD/YPG is the Syrian branch of the PKK terror group, which has waged a campaign against Turkey for over a decade resulting in the death of 40,000 people, including women and children.

The two presidents also discussed the importance of strengthening relations, latest developments in Syria, as well as following up on issues discussed at the NATO summit.

Last week, a two-day NATO summit took place in Brussels with the attendance of 29 NATO heads of state and government to make important decisions on the future of the alliance. -
