Turkish Court Remands Suspect Linked To Berlin Attack

20.03.2017 14:28

A suspect allegedly linked to Anis Amri, the slain perpetrator of last December's deadly Christmas market attack in Berlin, was remanded in custody to await trial by a Turkish court on Monday.

The court in Turkey's Aegean province of Izmir remanded the Jordanian-origin German citizen, identified only by the initials M.A.K.

He was initially detained on charges of being a member of the Daesh terror group during an operation conducted by Izmir police on March 11. The German national is also accused of entering Turkey illegally as well as plotting attacks in Europe.

Anis Amri was the main suspect in last December's attack that killed 12 people and injured 56 others in central Berlin. The subject of a Europe-wide manhunt, Amri was later shot dead days later by Italian police in Milan.

According to Turkish police, the German suspect in Izmir is also linked to 21 other people arrested over purported links to another deadly attack at an Istanbul nightclub in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Thirty-nine people were killed and 70 others were injured in the gun attack on Reina nightclub. Abdulkadir Masharipov, the main suspect in the atrocity, has been remained in custody over the attack. -
