Turkish Foreign Minister Meets Top US Security Advisor

17.10.2019 12:24

Closed door, 45 minute meeting in capital Ankara comes on same day President Erdogan is due to meet US Vice President Pence.

Turkey's foreign minister on Thursday met with members of a delegation led by the U.S. national security advisor in the capital Ankara.

Mevlut Cavusoglu met at the Foreign Ministry with the delegation including National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien and James Jeffrey, the U.S. special envoy for the anti-Daesh coalition.

O'Brien and Jeffrey are members of a U.S. delegation led by Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visiting to discuss Turkey's anti-terror operation in northern Syria, according to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is due later today to meet with Pence.

Cavusoglu's closed-door meeting with O'Brien and Jeffrey lasted for 45 minutes, and no further details were given.

Turkey on Oct. 9 launched Operation Peace Spring to eliminate terrorists from northern Syria in order to secure Turkey's borders, aid in the safe return of Syrian refugees, and ensure Syria's territorial integrity.

Ankara wants to clear northern Syria east of the Euphrates River of the terrorist PKK and its Syrian offshoot, the YPG/PKK.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the European Union -- has been responsible for deaths of 40,000 people, including women, children and infants. -
