Turkish Press Review

25.07.2014 11:48

Turkish dailies reported Thursday on the latest developments of the operation in Istanbul and other cities against police officers and officials in the wiretapping probe, along with the latest clashes in Israel and Palestine.

Anadolu Agency does not verify these stories and does not vouch for their accuracy.

Turkish dailies have devoted their front pages to news about the latest developments in Tuesday's operation in which 15 people – including high-ranking police officials – were detained for alleged illegal wiretapping and spying in anti-graft operations throughout police departments in several Turkish cities.

MILLIYET daily ran the headline "Cleansing Summit", an exclusive story about the operation against the "parallel state" of the Fethullah Gulen movement. The story said police officials affiliated with the Gulen movement were given an education on 'data removal' in Turkey's central Anatolia province of Afyonkarahisar before the December 17 anti-graft operations. The story also said police officials were subjected to a special course on 'wipe', a data removal program in a seminar, which was authorized by the deputy police chief.

The latest detentions follow two high-profile Istanbul-based anti-graft operations launched in December last year, which led to the arrest of high-profile figures, including the sons of the three government ministers as well as several businessmen. All those detained in the probe were later released pending trial.

HABERTURK ran with headline "Circles of illegal wiretapping", referring to 'parallel state's' illicit eavesdropping and wiretapping of Turkish Prime Minister and his immediate family.

Most Turkish dailies also covered the latest developments in Israel's attack on Gaza, which has seen a surge in violence following the murders of the three Israeli teenagers and a Palestinian youth earlier in July.

VATAN ran the headline "Massacre in school" as Israeli forces shelled a UN-run school sheltering Palestinian refugees in northern Gaza, where 15 people were killed and many were wounded on Thursday.

"Israel hit the UN school" titled HURRIYET. The daily said Israeli airstrikes targeted a UN-ran school in the northern Gaza strip town of Beit Hanon, "ing UN refugee agency official Robert Turner saying "This is a designated emergency shelter. The location was conveyed to the Israelis. There was no warning from the Israelis before the shells landed."

According to Palestinian Health Ministry official, the Palestinian death toll from Israel's devastating military offensive in the Gaza Strip rose to 815 early Friday following the death of 16 more people in fresh Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling.
