Incident takes place in Stonehaven, Aberdeen Wednesday morning following torrential rains.

At least 2 people are feared dead after a train derailment Wednesday near the Scottish city of Aberdeen, reports say.

Tens of emergency vehicles rushed to the area near Stonehaven following the incident.

Serious injuries have been reported from the scene by the local media with rising smoke visible from the accident site.

Local news reports say two people, including the train driver, have been killed and several others sustained serious injuries.

"Officers were called to the scene at 9.43 a.m. and remain there alongside paramedics and the fire brigade," British Transport Police said in a statement. Eyewitnesses say on various social media that around 30 emergency vehicles were in the area.

Describing the derailment as a "serious incident," Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she was receiving regular updates.

"This is an extremely serious incident. I've had an initial report from Network Rail and the emergency services and am being kept updated. All my thoughts are with those involved," she wrote on Twitter.

"I am saddened to learn of the very serious incident in Aberdeenshire and my thoughts are with all of those affected," British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also tweeted.

The derailment took place west of Stonehaven, where torrential rains and thunderstorms caused travel disruption and floods for the past 24 hours. -
