Two People Missing After UK Firework Factory Blaze

31.10.2014 15:03

Fireworks explode over town of Stafford after blaze erupts on industrial estate.

Two people remain unaccounted for following a fire at a fireworks factory in the U.K.

Exploding fireworks lit up the sky over the town of Stafford in Staffordshire and loud bangs could be heard around the area after the blaze broke out late on Thursday night.

Superintendent Jane Hewett said on Friday:  "We will continue to investigate this incident and work to ensure everyone is accounted for."

A search is due to get under way for the missing pair once the premises on an industrial estate are considered safe.

A 53-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fire, Staffordshire police said earlier.

Serious injuries

Police said two people were still in the University Hospital of North Staffordshire after the blaze.

One, who is in his 60s, was suffering a back injury and smoke inhalation while another man in his 40s had serious burns, West Midlands Ambulance Service officials said.

Two women, one in her 40s the other in her 50s, were assessed for smoke inhalation and discharged at scene.

Fifty firefighters attended the blaze and the police said an investigation would be launched into the cause once it had been completely put out.
