Typhoon Hagibis Lashes Japan, Kills At Least 2

12.10.2019 21:39

Typhoon packs winds of up to 180 kilometers (112) miles per hour.

At least two people were killed and 11 others injured on Saturday as Typhoon Hagibis struck Japan's capital Tokyo, local media reported.

Japanese news agency Kyodo said a massive typhoon brought potentially the heaviest downpours in six decades, with rivers overflowed across a wide area of the country.

Over 6 million people across Japan's main island of Honshu were advised to evacuate, with train operators suspending most services and airports shut down in the metropolitan and surrounding areas.

Japan's weather agency issued an unprecedented emergency warning over Typhoon Hagibis for Tokyo and nearby regions, saying heavy rain "with a level of intensity observed only once every few decades" was likely.

The agency has issued the highest warning on its one-to-five scale for Tokyo and the prefectures of Gunma, Saitama, Kanagawa, Yamanashi, Nagano, Shizuoka, Niigata and Fukushima.

As of late Saturday, the typhoon was packing winds of up to 180 kilometers per hour. -
