The UK has taken action against the world-renowned social media platform TikTok. The UK Office of Communications has opened an investigation to determine whether TikTok has fulfilled its obligation to protect children from harmful content.
The office will examine whether TikTok's measures to detect if a user is a child are adequate and whether its systems and processes to prevent children from accessing harmful content are effective. The office noted that opening an investigation does not mean a conclusion has been reached that TikTok has violated its legal obligations.
BAN ON SOCIAL MEDIA USE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 16
Last May, the office stated that TikTok had failed to adequately protect children in the UK from harmful online content. In the UK, where social media use for users under 16 was completely banned last month, various restrictions were also imposed on gaming and live streaming platforms.
TIKTOK STATEMENT
Following the investigation, TikTok denied any claims of wrongdoing. A company spokesperson stated in a declaration, "With platform rules developed in line with expert opinions and advanced age estimation technologies, we strictly enforce age-appropriate experiences in line with leading companies in the industry. We are confident that we have fulfilled our obligations under the Online Safety Act and will cooperate with the Office of Communications to demonstrate this."
